Safety

Both the Range Rover Evoque and RDX have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Evoque has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The RDX’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the Range Rover Evoque and RDX have rear cross-traffic warning, but the Range Rover Evoque has Rear Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The RDX’s Rear Cross Traffic Monitor doesn’t automatically brake.

The Range Rover Evoque’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The RDX doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Evoque and the RDX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The Range Rover Evoque’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the RDX’s (6 vs. 5 years).

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover Evoque’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The RDX doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque higher (6 out of 10) than the Acura RDX (5). This means the Range Rover Evoque produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the RDX every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover Evoque’s brake rotors are larger than those on the RDX:

Tires and Wheels

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Evoque offers optional 21-inch wheels. The RDX’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover Evoque Dynamic SE handles at .86 G’s, while the RDX pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Range Rover Evoque Dynamic SE executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the RDX (26.9 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 27.7 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Evoque’s turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the RDX’s (38 feet vs. 38.9 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Evoque has a greater minimum ground clearance than the RDX (8.3 vs. 8.2 inches), allowing the Range Rover Evoque to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Range Rover Evoque is 1 foot, 3.3 inches shorter than the RDX, making the Range Rover Evoque easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Towing

The Range Rover Evoque’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the RDX’s (3968 vs. 1500 pounds).

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the Range Rover Evoque uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The RDX doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The Range Rover Evoque’s standard Passive Keyless Entry allows you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Smart Entry standard on the RDX doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

The Range Rover Evoque’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The RDX’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover Evoque to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The RDX doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover Evoque offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The RDX doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Range Rover Evoque’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The RDX has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the RDX Advance.

The Range Rover Evoque has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the RDX Advance.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the RDX.

Economic Advantages

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Range Rover Evoque is less expensive to operate than the RDX because it costs $54 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Range Rover Evoque than the RDX, including $121 less for a water pump, $124 less for front brake pads and $868 less for a power steering pump.
