Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Land Rover Range Rover Velar have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Porsche Cayenne Coupe doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

Both the Range Rover Velar and the Cayenne Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Range Rover Velar gets better mileage than the Cayenne Coupe running its gasoline engine:

MPG

Range Rover Velar

AWD

2.0 turbo 4-cyl.

22 city/26 hwy

3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cyl. Hybrid

19 city/25 hwy

Cayenne Coupe

AWD

3.0 turbo V6

17 city/23 hwy

4.0 turbo V8

15 city/21 hwy

The Range Rover Velar has 3.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Cayenne Coupe E-Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (21.9 vs. 18.4 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover Velar’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50.1% to 49.9%) than the Cayenne Coupe’s (56.8% to 43.2%). This gives the Range Rover Velar more stable handling and braking.

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Velar has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe (8.4 vs. 8.2 inches), allowing the Range Rover Velar to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Velar w/Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is .4 inch higher than on the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe (9.9 vs. 9.5 inches).

Chassis

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 1300 pounds less than the Porsche Cayenne Coupe.

The Range Rover Velar is 5.2 inches shorter than the Cayenne Turbo GT, making the Range Rover Velar easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Land Rover Range Rover Velar amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover Velar has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is lower than the Cayenne Coupe (.34 to .35) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover Velar get better fuel mileage.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Velar has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Cayenne Coupe with its rear seat up (30.9 vs. 20.9 cubic feet). The Range Rover Velar has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Cayenne Coupe with its rear seat folded (62.7 vs. 53 cubic feet).

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the Range Rover Velar’s optional rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Cayenne Coupe doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Ergonomics

The Range Rover Velar has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Cayenne Coupe doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

On a hot day the Range Rover Velar’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Cayenne Coupe can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Range Rover Velar’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Cayenne Coupe’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Velar has a standard rear wiper. The Cayenne Coupe doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Range Rover Velar owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Range Rover Velar will cost $335 to $9185 less than the Cayenne Coupe over a five-year period.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Range Rover Velar second among midsize premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Cayenne Coupe isn’t in the top three in its category.
