Both the Range Rover and XM have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The XM’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the Range Rover and the XM have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Range Rover third among large premium suvs in their 2024 Initial Quality Study. The XM isn’t in the top three in its category.

On the EPA test cycle the Range Rover P550e running on electricity gets better mileage than the XM running on electricity (51 city/56 hwy vs. 46 city/46 hwy MPGe).

The Range Rover P550e can travel with zero emissions on electricity, only, on a full charge for 53 miles. The XM has to start its internal combustion engine after only 31 miles.

The Range Rover’s standard fuel tank has 5.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the XM (23.8 vs. 18.2 gallons).

For better traction, the Range Rover’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XM (285/40R23 vs. 275/35R23).

The Range Rover offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the XM; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the XM, which uses coil springs in front. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The XM doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Range Rover’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The XM doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover SWB’s turning circle is 5.1 feet tighter than the XM’s (35.9 feet vs. 41 feet). The Range Rover LWB’s turning circle is 3.1 feet tighter than the XM’s (37.9 feet vs. 41 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover has a 2.9 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the XM (11.6 vs. 8.7 inches), allowing the Range Rover to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Land Rover Range Rover may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 50 to 850 pounds less than the BMW XM.

The Range Rover uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The XM doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Range Rover LWB SE offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the XM can only carry 5.

The Range Rover’s standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. The XM’s standard single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

The Range Rover’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The XM’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover’s available tailgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The XM doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Range Rover’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the XM’s (7715 vs. 5952 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the BMW XM is only 5952 pounds. The Range Rover offers up to a 8200 lbs. towing capacity.

The Range Rover’s standard Passive Keyless Entry allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Comfort Access standard on the XM doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The XM doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover has a standard rear speed-sensitive intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the XM only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

To better shield the driver’s vision, the Range Rover has a standard driver’s side dual-element sun visor that can block glare from two directions simultaneously (Range Rover also offers optional passenger side dual sun visors). The XM doesn’t offer a secondary sun visor.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Range Rover to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XM doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Standard air conditioned seats in the front and second seat rows keep the Range Rover’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The XM doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

Both the Range Rover and the XM offer available massaging front seats. The Range Rover also offers optional massaging second row seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging rear seats aren’t available in the XM.

The Range Rover has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XM doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Range Rover first among large premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The XM isn’t in the top three.
